英惠因为一场梦而成为一位以坚决的姿态拒绝肉食的素食者，这是一个有些荒诞的开场，因为在《素食者》接下来的情节中，作者既没有告诉我们梦具体是什么，也无从推测这个梦从何而来，究竟与什么相关。我们只能从英惠的口中感受到那个梦的残忍，这让她拒绝吃肉。写下这个故事的是刚刚拿下诺贝尔文学奖的韩国作家韩江，诺贝尔文学奖的颁奖词中如此写道“以强烈的诗意散文直面历史创伤，揭示人类生命的脆弱”。

尽管不是中文世界的读者第一次接触和谈论韩国的文学作品，但是这必然是影响力最大的一次，韩国文学在中文世界的火热也不过是近几年的事，从金爱烂的《82年生的金智英》到导演李沧东的《烧纸》，韩国文学伴随着一些社会事件和热门影视剧进入了华语世界的文化视野，这个东亚世界的近邻与中文世界的读者共享着某些东亚社会弥散的痛楚。

在“金智英”与韩国的女性主义文学火热的当下，韩江最为人所知的作品《素食者》在中文的语境中也总是被纳入这样的一个东亚父权社会下女性文学的脉络读解，但是如果细读这个小说，其中的描写既有对于现实婚姻关系中女性状态的描绘，同时又给出了一种夹杂在现实与超现实之间的呈现方式。这与她在前作《植物妻子》中的写法不同，在《植物妻子》中，同样的“素食+成为植物”的奇幻构思在文本中以一种类似卡夫卡《变形记》的方式发生，妻子逐渐成为植物、丈夫为其浇水，这一切像是卡夫卡笔下的格里高尔.萨姆沙那样自然又诡异，似乎没有人觉得特别奇怪。到了《素食者》中，她似乎抛弃了一种超现实的写法，全篇没有出现主人公英惠直接变成植物的描写，而是去描绘她想要变成植物这一怪异的举动在旁人眼中的样子。如果说，在《植物妻子》中“变成植物”是主人公蓦然意起的冲动，在《素食者》中这一“变形”的决意则更激烈、更决绝，与更多的角色发生了强烈的戏剧性冲突。韩江为什么要这样写这个角色呢，这个“变成植物”的冲动究竟有着什么样的意味呢？

东亚社会的威权体制与转型正义问题

从诺贝尔文学奖的颁奖辞中我们可以获得一个重要的关键词——“历史创伤”。一切源自韩国的现代政治中那场由国家权力所施行的暴力——“光州事件”。韩江出生于1970年的冬天的光州，她9岁那年跟着父亲工作的变动离开了光州，四个月后的1980年5月18日，国立全南大学的两百多名学生在校门口示威抗争，彼时全韩精锐的空降特战部队已经做了数月的镇暴训练，乘卡车进入全南大学镇压暴乱。几天后，在愈发升级的对峙态势中，21日下午一时，占领全罗南道厅的光州市民听见屋顶上扩音器响起国歌，这是特战部队开始攻击的暗号，全斗焕在这天下令批准了用实弹武力镇压，军队向示威群众开火，锦南路成为了一片血海。

作家韩江在Louisiana Museum的访谈中说，这个事件在她的心里萦绕许久，常常在她的噩梦中浮现。作为幸存者的韩江在旁观暴力的时候总是面临着一种不断炙烤其内心的煎熬，为什么他们死了而我却活着？我们难道不是在他们的死亡之上活着吗？如何面对在历史中如此堂而皇之的正义的缺失呢？如何面对人类的暴力？

人类社会的伦理秩序往往在对那些历史创伤的审判中建立，二战后的纽伦堡审判与东京审判为国际秩序中的伦理奠定了根基，转型正义问题也是每一个从威权转型成民主政权的现代政体所必然面对的课题。在第三波民主化浪潮中走向民主转型的台湾和韩国，转型正义问题都在近年来被反复提及，对于历史暴力的记忆、讲述、追责、审判构筑了我们当下的伦理秩序，重新去书写那些在历史暴力中被侮辱、被伤害的人，那些面对暴力却留存了人性的尊严的人，才给予当下的政权一种合法性。在极左与极右都逐渐兴起的政治声浪中，这样的伦理秩序开始危险的摇晃。

韩江的作品《少年来了》，便从经历光州事件中不同人的视角讲述他们面对暴力的时刻。在访谈中韩江提到“我讨厌称他们为受害者，这像是在说他们被打败了，但是他们正是因为拒绝被那种暴力打败而死亡…… 我在处理那些面对暴力时如此高贵的人，那些献出了自己的血与生命的人。” 在这个语境下，回看她在2007年写作的小说《素食者》中，我们便能觉察出那个令她选择素食决心变成植物的，没来由的残忍的噩梦的意味和缘起。

如果你阅读《素食者》的文本，不难看出主人公有着一种作者自我指涉的意味，小说尽管并未直接触及历史事件，但是从韩江之后的写作中回溯，《素食者》像是一种对于她自己“言说困境”的书写，也是一种面向历史暴力的伦理姿态的宣誓，而之后的创作便是为了解决这一言说困境的道德实践，作为“历史暴力”的幸存者，她敏感地背负起这一道德义务，试图赎清她作为幸存者的“旁观之罪”。不同于对历史暴力的直接书写与反思，《素食者》的书写所给予的更是面对这一暴力的伦理姿态，对于这个伦理姿态的书写触及了在政治抑郁下的人们共同的痛楚。当一个人决定彻底的拒绝暴力，选择与自己的良心站在一起的时候她会获得什么呢？一个吃肉的社会是在指涉着什么呢？当文学创作者在书写意象与情节时往往不是被那种明确表意冲动所驱使，表意在论文或是演讲中便足以清晰地呈现，文学创作者的意象往往是内心混杂的冲动与情感的变体，一个更好的发问方式或许不是去问那些意象表达了什么，而是那些意象的诗意表达因什么样的感触而生，借由作家对于她敏锐的感触的书写，去开掘出那些普遍地沉淀于我们心底幽微的情感，一本书由此成为一把凿开我们内心冰封大海的斧子。

这几年经常出现在华语世界的讨论中的一个词是“政治性抑郁”，我想阅读到这篇文章的中文读者一定都已了解在中国、台湾、或是香港那些过去发生或是正在发生的暴力。我们并非暴力的直接承受者，某种意义上我们都是这样历史暴力的幸存者和“旁观者”，和作家韩江一样，我们都侥幸没有和那些我们所读到或是在影像中看到的人那样被侮辱、伤害，因而那些暴力的事件也并不直接出现在我们的生活中，只是不时如梦魇一般在我们的脑海中浮现。

直到某一天，或许是一些现实事件触碰了我们敏感的良知与公正的本能，我们选择以一种决绝的姿态退出生活在负罪的威权体制中的日常生活，成为一个与父母、朋友、老师在政治议题上格格不入的人，在微博、朋友圈或是小红书里，平时看似正常的朋友转发起那些与政治相关的言论让你觉得如此残忍而不堪入目，甚至让你觉得你与朋友们之间开始有了一道隐隐的坚壁，这就是《素食者》中的主人公英惠的状态。在那个梦之后，她再也无法直视肉食，这一饮食的惯习中所蕴藏的那种暴力令她无法下咽，所以她拒绝吃肉，拒绝融入他们正常的生活，因为所谓“正常”的生活，便是“吃肉”的生活。

其实“吃肉”并不会怎么样，甚至对于身体健康是有益的，否则英惠的身体不会变得如此瘦削，就像是生活在威权政体之下，偶尔唱几句赞歌、和同学们一起出席学校要求的党建活动、在公司里的同事或领导闲谈政治时接过话茬一同痛斥那些“被境外势力收买的抗争者”或是转发一篇公众号和央视新闻的微博，这都不会怎么样，甚至能让你在社交中获得认可与赞许，乃至一些特别实际、可触的利益；而且似乎，你实际也没做什么，责任不都应该仅仅归属于那些当权者吗？只是或许，从某天开始，你很难接过办公室的同事那些不自觉的残忍的话茬，尽管你知道出于一种社交的氛围他们期待着你肯定的回复或是附和；你不愿配合出席那场活动与他们一同挥舞红旗，尽管那会让你失掉几个学分和遭遇老师的质问；你甚至在家里谈论起这些问题时会开始顶撞父母，尽管你遭受他们严肃地警告，告诫你不可以如此谈论、告诫你要圆滑处事；你在网上参与批评一些政府的施政时，被网友们群起而攻之，以至于你不得不删除那条帖文；甚至，你的朋友们开始觉得你看上去有些过激，看你的目光逐渐有些异样，为什么要这么激烈地反对他们，是不是被洗脑了？为什么对这些事如此热忱？甚至有些“怪异”？但你知道，他们都不是“坏人”，像是《素食者》里生气地给英惠喂肉的父亲、想着给因素食瘦削的英惠补身体而炖了羊肉汤的母亲、把英惠送进精神病院常去探望照顾的姐姐，他们都不是坏人，他们甚至还是爱你的，只是，他们无法理解你，这就是韩江所描绘的“素食者”。“政治抑郁”无法被一劳永逸地解决，当我们选择了这样的一种伦理姿态，就需要认识到与其共处成为一种宿命，它令人痛苦，却也令人获得一种超越性的信念。

自从甘地“非暴力不合作”的抗争以来，在政治抗争中“绝食”成为了一种重要的抗争方式，“绝食”是一种对暴力的弃绝、一种无声抗争的实践、一种在我们表达哀悼时面对历史暴力的伦理姿态、一种信念的坚守，“白纸”同样也是这样的一种抗争的实践，它抹去了积极的表达和主张，仅传递出一种纯粹的拒绝，这种拒绝标示着人的尊严，这也同样是《素食者》中所传递出的面对暴力的伦理姿态。

在简体与繁体中文的互联网上，尽管走出了一种意识形态与政权的束缚，我们仍难免深陷威权之中那种诉诸“暴力”与“仇恨”的意识形态，或是面对政治的纷争体现出一种犬儒的姿态嘲弄、甚至对威权体制下生活的人们的苦难大呼“活该”拍手称快。仇恨与暴力并不是某种意识形态的专属，而往往蕴藏在每一种激进的冲动里。在《素食者》里，韩江并没有抹去主人公英惠的欲望，她仍然渴望“爱”而不仅仅是对于暴力的拒绝，只是在故事中，她的“爱”仅仅发生在影像艺术家的作品里而非现实，她接受同样在身上画上花与草木的艺术家的性爱，不因为他而因为他身上的美丽的草木。这也映照着政治抑郁者的现实困境，对于拒绝犬儒、麻木与仇恨而抱持良知的人而言，尽管在生活中被旁人的不解与暴力所笼罩，但是并没有成为将自己封闭失去对爱与良善的渴盼，韩江用自己之后的写作实践了这一点，而这样的伦理姿态的选择在诺贝尔奖的评选中不止一次地受到尊敬。

2010年，在诺贝尔和平奖的颁奖典礼上，一把空的座椅属于一个抱持着同样信念的“素食者”，他没有韩江那么幸运能在一个已经走向民主转型的国家，他的国家仍被暴力与极权所把持，所以他未能到场领奖，只有一封始终未能被亲口演说的讲稿，在讲稿中那个缺席却又在场的声音说道——“我没有敌人。”
